When a massive star (More than 5 times the mass of our sun) runs out of hydrogen fusion fuel, it will begin fusing helium. When the helium runs out, carbon and oxygen are fused next and this process continues until the killer of stars forms in the core: Iron.
Iron gives no energy when fused and is the most stable element. At the point the core fills with iron, the star collapses on itself in a massive Supernova explosion, leaving behind the extremely dense iron core.
