Hmm interesting. Most starters from gen 4 and onward do have a running theme across them. And considering that cryptid could be a possible theme and that the animals kind of line up with this its actually interesting. However its hard to picture the starters evolving into something like that at the moment

Pokémon are pretty much never themed after their region, and if cryptids are just defined as animals people believe to be real but aren't proven to be then jackalopes qualify. I mean they even are kinda real since they're inspired by rabbits with fungal infections.

Nessie makes sense, Lapras partially covered it but missed the "invisible" and "no proofs" theme aside from being rare weekly event in Johto.
Might be a solid guess.

Lucy also works, basically cryptids, one of the most wanted themes from /vp/ and fanmade fakemons.
