Imagine if they made an MC who actually knows basic shit about Pokemon before becoming a trainer.
It's simply unbelievable in the Pokemon world that its people, even its children could have trouble understanding even the simplest shit about Pokemon, like type matchups.

Like the whole point of the first episode is to show that’s he’s in over his head and rushing blindly into fights without understanding what’s going on, he’ll, he doesn’t even want to become a good trainee or champion, he just wants to catch Pokemon.

It’s literally the Luke Skywalker approach, have the character start off as a reckless dweeb who learns how to become a badass. It’s storytelling 101.
