Your problem was trying to find a server that was being advertised somewhere, instead of starting a server with a group of friends or a community.
/vp/ had several servers a few years back that were really good, netted around 30 to 50 players during the ORAS hype/speculation period.
There are a few discord fags that try to start servers now but they always flop because nobody likes them besides their gay little reddit-tier humor clique.
