I thought the Battle Frontier was fun for what it was. They attempted to have players engage with pokemon in different ways and come up with strategies to win that wouldn't necessarily work in PvP. If anything I'm disappointed in the gen 4 frontier for not pushing outside-the-box planning more than it did. Pokeathlon felt like a step in the right direction but Gamefreak didn't keep up with it moving forward.

Funny you should mention phones, my 3DS AND Switch both play fine off my phone hotspot (solid enough to play multiplayer splatoon 2 while crossing international borders without "the connection is unstable" rubbish). Non-argument kid, basic data plan and any smartphone can handle MP, especially one not as demanding as Pokémon's.
