It's fun enough. Game has a lot of Pokémon available out there and communities, while full of faggotry in some areas, have provided tiers & variations for almost every Pokémon to shine, moreso if we expand to created metagames.
It may be pretty tiresome to some that many players look like tryhard effortlessly spamming the same supposed best threats or using sample teams, but it's part of every competitive title, and while it's really not easy to become the best out there with a team of " suboptimal " Pokémon, it is perfectly possible to keep up a good winrate given the relative dumbness of many players whom you can run circles around. Adjusting your team to better deal with certain threats of the metagame does not necessarily require you to default to the same old stuff everyone's using: Each Pokémon has a fair amount of answers. Your own knowledge of what's to come upon playing a tier and applying it to your team building will still shine over a randomly thrown set of threats with supposed synergy that loses to a lot more.
It's also nice to have people to play this with so you can vary the experience: As mentioned before, there's tons of ways to play the game and have fun, where certain strategies can shine
