Competitively Feraligatr at least got something out of them however Typhlosion is an underdog favorite, the poor bastard sucks but people keep trying to use him to prove something and failing at it because he would actually be useful in a lower tier.
Design wise they are good and ingame they are quite entertaining to use, especially Chikorita as bayleef becomes a monster as you advance through the game and becomes even better as Meganium for clearing gym leaders, the others rely on sheer Strenght or getting thunder and ice punch, if I have to be honest totodile is the easy mode of this game.
The unova starters designs are OK at best, I appreciate what they did with Samurott really like Serperior and Emboar is cool although underapreciated for repeating a fighting pattern.
Serperior is an absolute beast competitive but his ingame plan is bayleef without good moves, I can only recommend it if you are playing B2W2 for the tutors, Emboar and Samurott are niche competitively and kinda suck although Emboar at least has some uniqueness.
To be honest nostalgia and borderline stupidity is what keeps the jotho starters relevant despite how mediocre they are, people bitch about Kanto bullshit but the Johto crew can be quite obnoxious.
