I do. But when I'm posting on an English language board I'm going to use English, and most Pokemon resources are in English so I know the names anyway. Don't ask me for character names though, I don't bother learning the English names

French canada never got the game translated until gen 4 (even then we could still buy the english version), so we all got the english names, and when the anime came around they dubbed the name in english instead of french. So everyone in Quebec uses the english name.

We're an interesting case, because the first games were only available in english here even if there was an appropriate translation made.
We had the french dubbed anime, but in a version that used the english language for the names of Pokemon and characters, with everything else being the same as the original french dub including the names of cities.

It fascinates me because looking back it's clear that it is the same dub with the same voice actors as the original french one, and the only differences are the names (with occasional slip-up, sometime you'd hear Sasha instead of Ash for no reason for example). So much work for a market of 6-7 millions people at the very most.

The Spanish translations are fucking awful because they were done buly Spaniards, they are fucking shit so no one in Mexico or a Spanish country plays them in Spanish.

The Pokémon names never changed however reading Castilian Spanish over "Como Molan los Pokémon" gets old really fast.
The names of the attacks were awful, tackle got changed to placaje, Leer to malicioso and so on.

No one I know plays the games in Spanish if they can avoid it.

I prefer some Japanese names to the English ones. Not all of them: some are better, some are worse.
No "native" names for me, sadly, the translators just took the English version and ran with it.

Let's see, in english, it's called Umbreon. In french, it's called Noctali. Nocta is coming from nocturnal and they all end with ali. Espeon is now Mentali. It sound awful when you say it. I will keep the name in english because it's better in my opinion.

Most of the time I have to google some trainer's name/attack/item/ability translation I don't remember because I'm a fucking brainlet and I can only remember either the spanish or the english one, not both.

I think French translators did a really good job, at least for the first gens. The bird trio in French makes a lot of sense : Articuno = Articodin ( Arctic + Odin ) Zapdos = Elector ( Electricity + Thor ) Moltres = Sulfura ( Sulfide + Râ )

There are some really clever French names in the 5th gen too. I know it because I made the etymology explanations for a fench site back in the days (and it was copy/pasted all over the french pokeweb without my authorization).
Lakmecygne, Vivaldaim, Haydaim refer to music composers for example.
