I'm pretty sure he's talking about type redundancy. Grass is only SE against types that you already have covered with Water and Electric. Having all three on separate pokemon is wasting one of your six slots that could otherwise go to covering more types.

My favorite type is grass mostly because i really like the mayority of their designs. Sure they have a good portion of weaknesses and aren't exactly on the top of the chain when it comes to the competitive environment, but i genuinely enjoy them a lot more than other types and learned how to accept it's flaws.
