My theory is that at least one of those was a poorly-hacked mon. The moment I hit save there was an error and the cartridge data got corrupted. Lost everything that wasn't already banked which wasn't much.
I was so pissed that I gave up on the games since then and didn't renew the bank subscription so some good shit I had there is gone, too. I'm planning on starting again once Sword and Shield come out, dust off whichever of my ancient GBA and DS cartridges still work and redo my legacy.
Bottom line is, if you trade shit off some guy you don't know, ALWAYS make sure they are or at least can pass off as legit.
