LGPE proved that nobody actually wanted this gimmick
And a vocal minority won't change their mind
Plus Gamefreak is probably too lazy to implement it

They probably reasoned that things would be too cluttered with both following and roaming Pokemon, and roaming Pokemon are essential to the core idea behind the Wild Area. Still, would have been nice to have them with you everywhere else.
