There is ONE wild area.
There are overworld encounters in areas outside of the wild area (most likely routes) such as caves.

There is one Wild Area, but it is very big and has different biomes.

You can see in the trailer that the more desert-looking area in north, close to the Dragon city, is part of the Wild Area

I mean, surely they wouldn’t be stupid enough to make it so that there was only ONE route, right? There’s obviously gotta be other places you can catch Pokémon right? Unless this area really is that big, and if it is, it’s gonna be walled off to make certain paths inaccessible to keep the game linear

The trailer showed that the game has camera control. Every shot on the various routes was from a different angle too.

I'm pretty sure the wild area extends upward through the valley under those bridges, with that stone area up north being the desert. Basically it fills all of the low ground between the castle town and not!london along with the area around the lakes.

As for the snowy spots, that did seem to just be a snowing forest at night. Nothing out of place for the south area.
