>>38815493>There's no reason for any modern game to still use random encounters.Ok, now you are mixing things. I like OW for Pokémon, don't take me wrong. But it works here because it is a monster catching game, and the wild battles aren't supposed to be a difficulty or curve thing for your levels (that's what trainers are for).
But random encounters aren't outdated at all, no matter how many people repeat it in this thread. Tons of games still use it. The key here is not "x bad, y good", it is to use the system that fits your game. RPGs that aren't for kids, like for example dungeon crawlers, use random encounters to fuck up the player's party and wear you down. Many games don't allow you to escape from them, or the chances to do so are low, or the money is tight and the equivalent of repels is something you need to think twice about.
Some games do better with OW, others do better with RE. It is about how you apply it for and how. Bravely Default has a slider that allows you to increase or decrease the amount of encounters you get, even allowing to lower to zero, but that is a bad idea because no levels means next boss will kick your ass.
