Pretty much, in the trailer he can change its shape and make it bigger when it's ready to battle so he can probably just make it disappeared altogether when he doesn't need it and summon it again at will.

it would have to be disproportionately large. look at glavenus from monster hunter. the method of attack barely works on something bipedal with a tail almost twice as long as its body. a quadruped would never be able to hit anything like that.

there's also some northern european mythos about a wolf carrying a sword.
