Hop has two Pokémon?

I'm not sure if most people have noticed, but it seems like Hop has 2 Pokémon in the first rival battle.

What could his second Pokémon be? The other starter? First stage psudeo-legendary?

I'm thinking it's the starter because Scorbunny is Lv.6, so it must have fought another Lv.5 Pokémon

This is most likely a situation like May/Brendan in Hoenn where you could grind a little before the first fight, most likely the bird or rodent of that gen

I'd normally come to that conclusion too, but the fact that we also get the starters right next to this battle field makes me thing otherwise.
You're probably right, but it still seems a bit weird for the rival to have a second Pokémon in the first fight.

That's what I'm thinking.

What if he battles with both and decides on the one strong against yours in the end? He does want to become Champion like Leon after all, so maybe he'll become power-hungry or something.

It might be to compensate for the fact that he has the starter with a disadvantage. You're entirely guaranteed to win that matchup by itself if the starters have STAB moves like in the past few games, so it's more a formality; perhaps whatever the other Pokémon is is designed to be an even matchup against your starter so the first battle can be a fair fight? (Or, failing that, it's also more of a power trip to steamroll two Pokémon than just one.)

It could be that that's just not the first fight.
That fight and the scene of choosing your mon seem to be taking place at Hop's house next door to yours.
But I imagine we're going to have to go do some shenanigans with the Professor and Sonia and their two buildings (one seems to be their lab while the other is their house) before you get to pick your Pokemon.
Though it looks like the choosing ceremony also happens at Hop's house, which is odd.

Maybe it goes
>Get Mon at Hop's House
>Fight Hop with one pokemon
>Run tutorial errands for Magnolia/Sonia (giving time to train or catch pokemon)
>Get train ticket out of there
>Fight Hop once more before the two of you leave

Or maybe he really does just start with two pokemon to give your starter a stronger boost.
