The wild area is just a small collection of biomes smashed together. If anything the trailer makes it seem bigger then it actually will be.

Not quite. It's all one biome (except there's a bit of a wasteland in the middle of it where those dead trees are) it's just that apparently the weather drastically changes each day. One day it can be snowing, the next it can be a massive sandstorm where you can't see shit.

do you have any proof of this? If not we can only go off the screenshots we have, which shows the trailer purposely showed off different looking biomes to make it seem like an expansive area when in fact its a small theme park of it.

The GX video has them placing all the shots. Many of the shots are in the same area but the weather is different.
That said, I assume the sandstorm will be limited to that wasteland portion while the snow, rain, etc will be able to happen anywhere on the map.

The map doesn't do a great job representing the geography. I've highlighted the portion of the map visible in this screenshot, the cyan dot represents where the player is standing and his facing direction. Unfortunately, the wild area is not that big.

Eh, looks like running from say the train station to the entrance of the dragon fortress would take maybe 2-3 full minutes. It's not BotW massive, but it's huge by normal route standards.

We've seen plenty of routes besides it. The fields around the Grass town, floating ice area where that fighter was, the cave, etc.
There's gonna be plenty of routes and the map isn't 1:1 scalewise. Wild Area will be bigger than all of them of course, but they still will exist.

The Wild Area is huge. Big enough that it probably doesn't follow euclidean geometry, meaning using the region map as a point of reference is useless.

What's stopping the bit I marked in black from being part of the Wild Area. I zoomed in and unlike everything to the left on the cliff above and to the right, there doesn't seem to be any man-made roads or structures in that area.

The part you marked IS part of the wild area. It starts at the train station south of the 2 central lakes and extends up to the dragon city. The problem is that the wild area isn't that large within the game, and you can probably run across one side to the other in the span of a few minutes (minus all the distractions like trainers etc)

This doesn't seem to be the case. It actually seems more like an older Zelda game.

There's one big overworld area, the Wild Area, that connects every location in the game. You can go through it at your leisure and reach towns/cities/dungeons/etc.

It seems very straightforward to me.
