I can see why Meowth is on the list, as he makes an appearance every episode in the anime, which by giving him a lesser detailed look it would be easier to draw those! No idea why Horsea and Blastoise are on the list other than having shit taste.
There are some good designs in the new generations, but the design is so lineair and basic that only a few of them stand out, and guess what! Those few actually represent the artstyle more of MOST of the pokemon in gen 1. So all it does in this picture is exactly prove my point. Because I can easily replace the right side with good designed first gen pokemon while your list from newer generations is only reduced to a few.
