Sure he makes Brook and Misty easy, but Bulbasaur is a pain in the ass the early game.
There are bug, flying, Poison Pokemon every fucking where.
Early game you're forced to fight Caterpie, Weedle, Pidgey, Spearrow, Nidoran trainers all over the place, then in caves there are Zubat trainers with x4 resist to grass, most routes then have oddish or Bellsprout, and Bulbasaur doesn't learn any good Poison moves, sticking to shitty grass moves and fucking tackle.
And the absolutely fucking worst... Metapod and Kakuna trainers, who boost up defense with harden while you do shit damage with physical moves and grass types at 1/2 damage.
If you play Bulbasaur, you need to get a pidgey asap and put Bulbasaur aside practically for most early game.
Even when fighting Surge, you can get right away a Digglet from Digglet cave and curb stomp him.
And by the time you fight water trainers you already can get Voltorb and variety of grass types.
