Why they didn't introduce a sort of overdrive mechanic instead is beyond me.
Something that makes your Pokémon have a shiny aura (the same as the ones from the Totem Pokémon, since GF is so keen on re-using assets, that's a missed opportunity) for 3 turns that boosts all moves (pretty much like Dynamaxing but without the increase in size bullshit).
It wouldn't be accessible right away, but something you have to build up and almost certainly fills up right away if your Pokémon is in a critical condition and your bond is high. And then after 3 turns the Pokémon will get exhausted and a turn will be skipped, making the gimmick not incredibly OP but very useful in a pinch and something people would definitely want to use if a battle is tough or drags on.
This would make Mega Evolution also viable still as you could combine both but if you don't use it at the right time you can risk your Pokémon getting knocked out after the 3 turns when the exhaustion kicks in, so not only have you wasted a mega evolution, but a once per battle mechanic as well.
>How would explain it to be a once per battle thing, then?
The overdrive would come with the help of the trainer, much like Z-Moves and Mega Evolution. The bracelet or whatever would lose energy after use.
If Game Freak actually cared about little details, the bracelet would light up in accordance to the overdrive meter, shine while being used, and then lose its shine after use.
This would make it a much more exiting mechanic imo.
