What was the deal? I mean how the changing of seasons affected the gameplay apart from deerling? All I know is that during winter you could go in some places in a cave and stop. Was it more?

It affected when Morning/Day started, weather, when Castelia Cones are sold, in-game events, what Pokemon were available, trainers, in-game trades, where Cynthia was, and who was visiting her.

It should be based on the real season and solely a cosmetic thing in the overworld. I wasn't a fan of having certain areas or paths blocked off in certain seasons.

This is a good point. Pokemon has always sold itself on its fantasy, the world that it takes place in is really romantic and fantastical, and they worked on introducing mechanics that really sell that world to you in a way meaningful to the mechanics. But nowadays we don't have seasons that change the level design and Pokemon encounters, we don't have Day Night cycles that make the game world mirror reality in a convincing way, we don't have Pokemon that walk around outside with you. We get shit like cafes and cutscenes.

Huh.

Seems the older abstractions, probably more simplified due to the technology, were better at immersion than the new stuff.

Cool concept but ended up hating it
I play maybe a month or two of each game when they drop then replay over the course of a week 2 years later
Meaning I've missed out on half of the seasons
Do that many people really play year round?
If seasons were a week I'd like it but I imagine others would find that stupid

Seasons should have been weekly instead of monthly. Any given playthrough will take place in only one season unless you started it at the end of the month.
