while kanto is far from my favorite region i was recently replaying fire red and it was refreshing to see how little it holds your hand
>can do some gyms out of order
>doesnt tell you where to get ANY of the fucking hms
>doesnt tell you where to get the pokeflute
>doesnt tell you where to get the tea for the guards
>get to one island
>bill tells you to fuck off and explore instead of giving you a concrete goal
>puzzles while still piss easy are much closer to being puzzles than the fucking trials/tapu rooms

>trainers in the poison gym have majority psychic type mons outside koga
>literally no rock moves

after putting so much time into the newer games and having rock end up as my favorite type, looking back and seeing gen 1 only have TWO rock moves (one of which is just an upgraded form of the other) is absolutely fucking retarded. LGPE only had 3 rock moves too

The open ended mid-late game of Kanto is the best part. My main issue with Kanto is honestly the variety of encounters. Most routes have the same shit over and over again. A lot of the other stuff is either a gift, ingame trade, or in the Safari Zone. I get why they did this - to encourage players to explore and hunt things down, but it's annoying looking back how little you can get just in ordinary areas. Much like with having just one Ghost and one Dragon type, it's something that made sense back then as a stand alone game, but not in context of the rest of the series.

its one of those things they could've fixed so easily in frlg or even lgpe but noooo gotta keep the exact same problems the base game had while improving very little. at least oras had a fuck ton of post game changes (excluding removal of frontier i'll never not be mad)

I haven't played LGPE but it looks like it has better encounter tables at least. I don't get why both sets of remakes didn't let you get the cross gens besides "muh 151". At least HGSS and ORAS get you get a few of them.

Oh, actually i did go into the safari zone, but just kinda forgot Koga's gym somehow
didnt even get fly like, waaaaay later. i just walked everywhere and thought "well, its an RPG, after all"

This just reminded me that the first time I played gold (I was like 10) I beat the entire game through red without fly because I didn't talk to the npc in town after beating the gym on that island. There's definitely too much hand-holding now, but too little can also be pretty bad.

The other case is in GSC it's easy to miss the Radio Card, which is fine until you go to Kanto and have no idea how to wake up Snorlax.

That said, since GSC we've gone so far in the handholding direction that I'd rather have problems like that now and then.
