What exactly makes a pokemon's design "digimon"? At first I thought it just meant pokemon with intricate designs, but I've seen simple pokemon be called digimon too. Or am I overthinking it and it is just a catch all term for things I don't like?

They usually copy current toy trends (which digimon is not relevant to western culture at the moment) but you can tell when it’s a Pokémon based on a yokai watch or based on a power ranger, the difference here is they did it in reverse, trying to make a digimon or a zoid look like a Pokémon instead of making a Pokémon look like a digimon or a zoid.

Compare them to Groudon or Kyogre
Sure, Groudon and Kyogre's color schemes suit the titles, but they aren't literally just giant ruby monster and sapphire monster, respectively, there's more to them than a brand name
Zacian and Zamazenta are literally just "DOGS WITH TITULAR GIMMICK", designed to be instantly recognizable, while also making them bland and forgettable

Pretty much. It's an empty sort of "insult" which equates to "this is bad I don't like".
As someone who watch Digimon, I will never not find it hilarious whenever someone said that, knowing what Digimon is capable of.

Its more just pokemon that are just overdesigned to the point that they lose the simplistic nature of pokemon designs without adding to their overall theme.
For example, Emboar has unnecessary lines on his belly but they serve a purpose to further emphasize the connection to Journey to the West. His colors are normal. Keldeo has the same color scheme as Zacian but its design is kept simple.
Zacian has contrasting colors and lines that add very little to the overall design. The sword has random things added to it, the scars are unnecessary, and the wings and crown as both have too much going on to create a pokemon-style design. It needed refining.

since gen 5 designs are more made to be dynamic in mind, the seemingly "unnecessary" things end up actually being thoughtful, like how Zacian's extra fluff are actually parts of his sword

I cannot agree with this more, and it's the exact reason why I find these to be the worse legendaries. No other legendary sets do that except maybe Dialga and Palkia somewhat because they have a diamond and pearl attached to them. However, it's certainly not their main gimmick, which cannot be said about the Z-Wolfs whose only iconic design pieces are the sword and shield stapled on to their bodies.

I think the difference falls to a design paradigm. Early gen pokemon looked more like wild animals. There were certain exceptions like Machoke and Jynx but overall everything looked biological if that makes sense. Moltres looked like a bird. What made it legendary was that it was constantly on fire. Which isn't outside the norm because the Charmander line is also constantly on fire. Is Lugia actually controlling storms or is that a legend because a fisherman happened to see a rare pokemon pass by as a bad storm was ending while he was at sea. It's easy to see older gen pokemon have their own habitats because their defining features are things used for survival. Like Nidorinos poisonous horns or Geodude being indistinguishable from a normal rock until it reveals itself.

Which is why people say new gen pokemon are for marketing. Scorbunny has a bandaid on its nose probably to make it look like a football player. So are ALL Scorbunny born with that bandaid? Zacian has a sword that it carries around. So do ALL Zacian find a sword to carry around or is there an order of wolf knights that we don't know about? Because while a wolf carrying a sword looks cool it looks less like a wild animal and more a toy.

That's why they're called digimon. Digimon can be animals but they also have fully sentient animals with their own societies and laws. That's why you have dinosaurs who are also knights and gods that other Digimon worship. Pokemon is not supposed to be that, it's supposed to be man coexisting with nature. Once you say that Pokemon are just as smart as people it becomes abhorrent to use them strictly for battling and keep them in your pocket at all other times.

And yes I do put too much thought into a series made for children.

I think the issue is more that these could be removed and make the design look cleaner. It could have just been a normal looking sword but instead looks more "digimon-y" with the added frills.They don't actually help the theme as much as it does just add needless details.

It really doesn't have anything to do with Digimon. It just has a bad habit of doing the same thing more often than pokemon. It legitimately does have too many details in comparison to past legendary designs.I like Zacian's design, but its not really a classic pokemon design. It doesn't need a mundane sword so much as it needs less total frills to really "fit in."

You are correct, it is a random insult. There are plenty of Digimon that could pass off as Pokémon and viceversa. We only know they aren't because we know how to recognize the art style, but Agumon and Patamon, to name two random examples, could work perfectly as Pokémon.

People think that anything that isn't a simple animal = Digimon, as if gen I didn't have Magneton and Machop. Someone is here complaining about the rabbits band-aid as if Kadabra didn't use spoons.

There isn't a rule to what makes a Pokémon a true Pokémon and a Digimon a true Digimon. They are just monsters.

Marketing has almost nothing to do with Zacian and Zamazenta's designs, the actually basis for their designs come from Odin's 2 wolves in norse mythology as they would stand beside Odin's sword and shield respectively.
If you want to bring up Ruby and Sapphire they weren't named after Groudon and Kyorge, they were named after the Red Orb and Blue Orb which those games' stories were centered around. The titles were most likely just perfect for the the region's aesthetic, theme and the designs of the legendaries.

Who could say they were possibly expecting SM to be about traveling parallel dimensions, the only real thing alluding to that before the games release was the oversaturation of trailers for the game, If you went into SM completely blind you'd have no idea how the end of the game would turn out. In gen 6 nobody was expecting the theme to be about life and death with a titles like X and Y. In gen 5 it was definitely the most direct with what it could be as the games were very story heavy with its theme of truth vs ideals.
The games have no gimmick with the story telling and the themes are never given away until you play through the games. The only real exception is SM, but solely cause of moderately bad marketing.
As for SwSh, we can only speculate and so far the games seem to be alluding to a man vs nature theme as you could interpret the titles to be alluding to something like sword for demolition by man and shield as protection of nature. But that's all speculation and we'll have to wait for the games to come out before anyone has the right to start relentlessly shitting on it.

legendaries arent classic pokemon though. i think its fine if legendaries have crazier wild designs, thats what i think was so good about ultra beasts. theyre supposed to be weird as fuck and not fit in with the typical pokemon designs. legendaries are legends, not cats and dogs you see running around everywhere. they should have that extra color or feature that makes them stand out from a regular pokemon. it doesnt have to be size like earlier gen legendaries. personally this is my favorite duo since lugia and ho-oh.

Basically when a pokemon has a lot of redundant details rather than using a simple or more subtle design to be good. Not that it's a bad thing as pokemon can do a lot more with better graphics on new systems but sometimes they are overdesigned and unappealing.

I feel like this could apply to Solgaleo and Lunala, but at least with them they were pretty distinct from each other.
Zacian and Zamazenta look so similar I feel like it's easy to mistake them for each other, like with Landorus, Thundurus, and Tornadus. At least they were different colors.

Zamazenta and Zacian are as generic as wolves get. They're just wearing stupid costumes to hide the fact that they're ordinary animals. Garurumon on the otherhand has many characteristics to make it distinct from regular wolves, the most notable being it's blue fur of course but also the fact that it has feathers instead of fur and a feline tail.

It's what has bothered me about the SM starters the entire time, but it shouldn't really be of concern for legendaries since they are one of a kind anyways. It's fine if they are more specialized

Of course, they all still have other inspirations tie into them, just like the wolves with Odin, but the game titles are represented very literally
