Complete garbage. The only excuse I can think of, is that this pokemon was retroactively made from its evolution stages.

Only if you have two of the same ball then. It says it can't be holding an item in the first place, which would mean the ball is converted into a held item and you'd still need to manually retrieve it after battle.
