Dragon quest is based.
The games all have the same general formula, but each one is an incremental improvement on the last.
Square Enix also listens to feedback.

I really do hope that SE doesn’t listen to the people saying that the games are staying too traditional.
They don’t understand that a big draw of the series is that you can play any game and it’s the same general formula; come into a town, talk to the NPCs to understand what to do, solve their problems..

I still haven’t played XI, because I want to keep waiting so I’ll enjoy it more when I do play it

Android versions are fine I hear, but I've never actually tried playing DQ on a smartphone. Imagine the virtual d-pad would get on my nerves like in final fantasy. For most of the titles prior to XI, the Nintendo handheld versions are generally the best IMO. 8 is on sale in NA on the 3DS eShop I believe, and that's one of the best ones.

Not interested in DQ, but i'll use the extra time to play a part of my backlog which includes Skies of Arcadia, Baten Kaitos, and some Tales Of game, don't know which yet.

The formula hasn't changed much compared to other long-running JRPGs, but it's been polished to a brilliant sheen. If you liked IV, you'll probably love the later games. VII is a bit of an oddball.

Depends on the game. Zenithian trilogy is great for example but VIII has framerate issues. Regardless I would wait for a sale.
