I highly suggest playing Dragon Quest Monsters iirc the 3ds games got translated a while back if you're looking for a monster collecting game

And if you're just looking to play literally anything else give Dragon Quest Rocket Slime a chance the DS game is already in english but I don't remember if the GBA game or the 3DS games were ever translated

Dragon Quest is THE original JRPG, you can't get more soul than that.
It may be hard to put the appeal of the series in words, but despite looking simple at first glance, the games keeps you hooked.
