it was already starting to with DPPT, BW2 just salvaged things a bit, then it was back down again
more than anything, they've always been lazy as shit, relying on gimmicks that they throw out after each generation, and being stubbornly traditional about the most pointless game mechanics

maybe half of those are actually innovative pokemon that fill new roles because of different typing or stats, and the same can be said for most generations
the problem is the rest of the redundant pokemon that fill the exact same role as their predecessors down to their movepools and animal inspirations
there's a shitton of bug, normal, water, and ice types that never should've been created
at some point they need to stop being such cunts, add some 4th and alternate evolutions to old mons, and overhaul their base stats instead of doing stupid shit like megas
but it doesn't matter, gamefreak dug its grave, it's going to be the same sorry rehashes for another 10 or 20 years before pokemon finally fades into obscurity
