Showdown is the best fanmade project I have ever played. I just discovered it recently and It's amazing how thorough it is. If GF put in the effort into the new games that Smogon put into its website and showdown we would get the greatest pokemon game ever.

I can’t really play Showdown because of how the timer works. Pokémon is a game where you should be able to think ahead 5-10 turns, instead I’m fighting the timer just as much as the opponent. I much prefer cartridge for comp.

Too bad now comp is going to be a completely different meta on Switch.

It depends. If I’m put in a bad position, then it can take a long time to figure out the optimal play, weigh the risks/rewards of certain plays I could make to try and get back in a dominant position, predict the opponent’s move, their moves for the next 5 turns or so, in response to my possible plays, etc. Honestly this is how I play every game, including board and card games, but a timer in those games would also kill me. I would say like a third of Showdown games end up with me clicking buttons in panic mode with 10 seconds on the timer.

Yeah. I think I should also come up with certain “rules” for what the safest play to make in a situation would be, so that I can be like “no, I should never risk x in y situation” and immediately make the safer play and save time. I’ve noticed that the best players are more defensive and rarely rely on chance.
