I want to play Kanto for the first time. Should I get the original red on the 3DS or buy a DS Lite and play FireRed? Money isn't a concern, since I want to buy some GBA games anyway

I don’t think you can go wrong with either classic red/blue or firered/leaf green. The remakes at probably the most faithful remakes they’ve mad so there isn’t too much different between the 2 besides graphics. I love FRLG I’d personally recommend those. Just don’t play LGPE

If you already have a 3DS, then you should probably play Red, Blue, or Yellow on Virtual Console (though FireRed and LeafGreen are better if you really want to put money down, even though you could emulate them). Then play Crystal or HGSS. Not worth spending the extra money rather than emulating though.

firered is in most ways better. if you want to experience a truly broken game, get the original on the eshop (blue version), start with bulbasaur, keep razorleaf forever, get a meowth to evolve into persian for slash and teach it bubblebeam, then just beat the game with those two pokemon and three moves almost effortlessly because crit rate was dictated by speed.

if it was me and money wasn't an issue i'd go on craigslist/ebay and buy a GBA SP or backlit GBA and play fire red or leaf green. alternatively just buy a gameboy color and play red or blue (or even yellow).
i just prefer those handhelds to 3ds/ds lite

Red/Blue are still enjoyable I feel as a first experience, however you can't go wrong with FRLG. They feel very polished for their time.

Play Leafgreen, that's the only way to get a Slowpoke in gen 3. FRLG added a ton of cool places to explore in the Sevii islands, they're so expansive you can get lost in them.

i think frlg are good, and i definitely liked the sevii islands, but i wouldn't say the sevii islands are so expansive you can get lost in them.

Adding to this, I still have no idea why they did this with Slowpoke. Pokemon XD had all of the FireRed exclusives along with every other LeafGreen exclusive, and any Ruby/Sapphire exclusive that wasn't in Emerald was obtainable through XD as well.

Are there any issues transferring pokemon between gens if I used a flashcart for the GBA / DS titles? I've lost all my old game carts so I'm wanting to go through all the games again but this time bringing pokemon from each game along with me.
