If you have a 3ds play Devil Survivor Over clocked I fucking love the voice acting there.
It's also on the ds without voice acting though. But I play it for the story, the combat there is grid based like fire emblem.
Soul Hackers, again for the 3ds, is one of my favorite experiences, very retro. This one I only recommend on 3ds.
Smt Nocturne on ps2 is a more standard rpg and absolutely fun OH WAIT this is a pokemon board right? Nocturne is actually the game that feels the most like Pokémon. You're alone on your own in the world catching demons and traveling around while Soul Hackers and Devil Survivor don't have much exploration.
And of course, Shin Megami Tensei 4 for the 3ds is great as well, but 3 for ps2 should be your priority, you can handily emulate it on pc
