Really the only benefit to Pokemon over Digimon was the battle system, which was consistently evolving across all generations. Pokemon treated its battle system like a card game, where every game built on a series of tools from previous games.

Digimon never had that: almost every game was it's own thing like a traditional RPG. It never developed the depth of combat that Pokemon did.

...But now that's all out the window and they're gutting combat features AND pokemon as well.

The digimon anime is better than the Pokemon one, exponentially so once the Orange Islands start.

The only reason Pokemon was more successful is that Digimon World required greater than a double digit IQ to play and wasn't on a handheld

The Pokemon anime is just goofy antics and a meandering plot that shows off gameplay mechanics. Only its first season was any good and felt like it was going anywhere.

Digimon Adventure however was better than Pokemon even then. It has a single connected story with amazing character development and holds up incredibly.

Haing the same protagonist doesn't make it the same series. They're marketed as separate series in Japans.

There is no overaching plot either, every series is self-contained.
