If they just add battling and amie to it then they'd already win over a fuckload of the people that are so upset over this.

I think a lot of people would calm down if it had battling. It would still be shit, though, because it'd probably only have 3v3 singles and VGC, and showdown will still offer the same and more for free. Come to think about it, if it has battling, then they may finally nuke showdown off the face of earth.

They want you to pay a subscription fee to keep your “Bros” around, not to transfer them forward and cancel your subscription immediately. Their whole plan is to force you onto this fucking service. I bet Pokemon Home has a National Dex FFS.

They’ve planned this shit from the beginning but when they reveal it you’ll all forgive what they’ve done to the franchise and start plopping down a monthly subscription fee alongside buying all the new games. This is what they want. This is what they expect.

Have they said anything about Home being an extra subscription fee?
I assumed it was gonna be a perk included with Nintendo Online since they desperately need some new bonuses for that service.

I will retract my outrage if this is the case but I have severe doubts. Pokemon Bank was a subscription service, and everyone paid for it. Why would they retire that service for one that was engineered to make less money, when their new policy of “gotta catch a few” would force even MORE players to use it?

In a way, it’s brilliant. Put trading, battling, amie, and a complete (reference-app-tier) National Pokedex on a mobile app, and charge a sub to use it. Tie it to the games and to Pokemon Go. Basically every Pokemon player is instantly monetized by it, and it doesn’t hurt the sale of the games themselves because they’re still the only source of each new generation’s mons.

Combine that with the Smash-tier “HE’S IN” roster drama they could drum up for which mons show in each subsequent release, and you have a huge new revenue stream that also generates marketing hype while reducing workload. Were it not for the immediate and catastrophic backlash and outrage it would have been a golden move from a corporate standpoint.

I would be very careful of that optimism. This isn’t /vp/ outrage, it’s worldwide. It won’t bankrupt the company, but the game will quite likely have lackluster sales numbers.

People have this idea that players are crack addicts who can’t stand on principle and refuse to buy something they disapprove of, even though plenty of extremely significant franchises and developers have landed flat on their red-inked asses in recent years over it. I don’t think GameFreak will back down on this decision before release, but I also think SwSh will fail to break the 10m install mark.

You're being too idealistic here. The games will still sell ridiculously well. Especially since we're still 5 month out from release.
By the time they do another direct, people will have cooled on this substantially. They may flare up more around then, but this shit will only affect maybe 1/5th of the audience while the rest won't care.

The casual consumer-base for this game FAR outweighs those who will be so turned off by this change that they'll stick to a true boycott.

even if sales numbers got cut in half because of this they will still be rolling in money
especially when they are charging 50% more for the new titles
they have drastically reduced their production costs for all future titles with this change, as this is confirmed as their approach going forward
people might skip a gen or two, but when the 3ds online servers get taken down forever people will come crawling back yet again

You realize that missing sales projections by 20% is a big deal, right? Nobody is saying the game will sell 12 copies, that’s obvious ridiculous, but a franchise that typically pulls 15m copies for a mainline game suddenly pulling 10-11m is a problem. Especially since it’s their first-ever console mainline title AND it’s “open world exploration, pokemon on the main map” tier fanwank bait. This title should be selling MORE than a typical mainline. If it shifts single-digit millions, it will be a financial failure.

That doesn’t mean it won’t have been profitable in the purest sense. But it does mean someone whose job it was to sell 15m of something is going to have some serious explaining to do for his shitty decisionmaking and planning. Especially if merch sales or anime viewership take a corresponding hit.

How can people be so ignorant of business, it’s astounding. A company doesn’t have to literally go bankrupt from a mistake for it to be a big enough problem to cost people jobs. A company losing a few hundred million dollars on a decision will get that decision reversed; it doesn’t matter if they’re still profitable at the end of the day, it’s hundreds of millions of dollars LESS profit.

Numbers going down is always bad. Nobody goes to investor meetings and shrugs off “we lost $100m, but we’re not worried about it and we’re not gonna do anything different”.
