This was solved by the proto-Gen 2 leak. Umbreon was originally Poison-type.

Did it have a different design too? Because Umbreon definitely LOOKS like a Dark-type, it just doesn't behave like one.

Game Freak makes a lot of baffling decisions. Can't wait for Scrafty to not be in Sword and Shield despite the fact that Punk culture was so prevalent in Britain.

are colored sprites official? I thought they were colored by fans. I think the poison typing might have been purely speculation, but it would make sense as the "evil" counterpart to espeon's good cat spirit. in the absence of a dark type, poison makes the most sense thematically.

I remember the colors were made from an anon in /vp/ and he got a little sad that poketubers took the pic and hailed it as canon like the sniveling rats they are.
So people took it as face value and even thought it was real information, hell, espeon’s trivia in the Pokémon wiki even states “In The Pokémon Gold and Silver Beta, Espeon was yellow“ which isn’t even true because this was done by some random guy in here.
