I also get the feeling that they truly are totally out of touch with their audience. These past few games have been nothing but "we want kids to like pokemon again!" but the main audience is people who started out with gens 1-4 and are getting older now (20s-30s) but still love games. Actual kids are more interested in Fortnite, Splatoon 2, FNAF, Roblox, etc.
Detective Pikachu only did so well in the theaters because they changed up the plot from the mamby pamby child-friendly 3DS game to something with more grit.
