Sure, If you believe so, that's fine, but I don't really think so. First, all first-stage Evolutions look somewhat plain (that's most of what we got), Second, what exactly do you mean by plain? If you mean that they don't have a specific amount of lines and shapes in their design? that's not true (pic related). I'm definitely not disputing your opinion, I'm just saying I don't see what you're talking about.

Well take the starters, Wooloo, and Impidimp for example. They have very basic shapes and not a lot going on. Personally speaking, they feel artificial to me. Corviknight and Drednaw are mostly fine, but even the later has some weird blockhead going on.
I just see a difference in the design philosophy under Turner's direction, and I'm not liking it.

they've shown barely a handful of new pokemon, and a couple of them (like corviknight and grookey) are really good. these games have much bigger issues than the pokemon designs.

I'm not calling Voltorb good either. I find many Kanto Pokemon boring as well. 3-7 are the best ones imo.
