Literally all Gamefreak has to do is show off the Starter's evolutions and you will think they're cool/cute and you'll all be back onboard to buying the games.

Gonna copypaste my explanation from another thread:

This was gonna be a hard pill to swallow regardless of when it happened, but it's smart of GF to have gone and done it now.
By doing this horrible shit early on, they're setting up for this to blow over by the time the games release. They just started their hype cycle for the game and will likely drop new pokemon and information every month for the next 5 months.

GF will keep releasing new information and while the adamant boycotters scream at everything new, the normies and casuals will just see the new shit and start to think "well, maybe it's not so bad" which is exactly what GF wants.
I give it 3 months before the only people left boycotting the game are seen as angry little autists trying to ruin other people's fun. By exposing their weakness this early on, GF has taken the first napkin and are poised to control this whole situation.

I literally never care about the starters. They’ Not were the design strengths get to be shown. They’re obligatory and thematically same same. Bulbasaur and Rowlet are the most unique but it appears to be limited to Grass types.

couldn't disagree more. this is the type of news you dump on a friday afternoon a full year before the game comes out. that way, by the time you're ready to start hyping the game for real, the outrage would have already peaked and declined. also, less people would have likely known about this in the first place.
