Dissecting Pokemon's six-year obsession with Gen 1, Kanto, and the original 151, and how I believe they're staining this franchise.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/c11t1v/dissecting_pokemons_sixyear_obsession_with_gen_1/Okay, I'm not going to completely focus on Sword & Shield, nor the recent drama surrounding it, in this post.
Instead, I will be talking about a certain region, the most recognizable set of characters, and the generation that started it all: Kanto and the "Original 151".
It's going to be a little lengthy, so keep that in mind, and I deeply apologize for that. Keep in mind that this is only my opinion.
To make things clear, despite its over-saturation and overexposure, I don't hate Gen 1. It's not my favorite region, nor does it have my favorite selection of Pokemon, but it started it all, and I respect that. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Red & Blue's success.
But unfortunately, Pokemon, over the last six years, has really started to poison my view of this region, set of Pokemon, and games in general.
Over the last six years, starting with X & Y, Game Freak and the Pokemon Company have been acting like parents who only value their eldest, treating Gen 1 like their favorite child.
They give Gen 1 all the food it wants, all of the new toys they buy, and they give all of their love and care to it, taking attention away from the other six well established generations they have created.
What's a good example of this? Well, I believe this whole problem started after the criticism of Gen 5, so I'll be using X & Y for my point here:
In those games, the very first Pokemon that the player is scripted to encounter is a Pidgey, Santalune Forest is an EXACT copy of Viridian Forest, you get a Gen 1 starter and a Lapras, a sleeping Snorlax appears with the Poke Flute, a majority of Megas were given to Kanto, and the list goes on and on.
And how much recognition did the other generations get?...
...Next to nothing! In fact, other than
