Looking at Lickilicky makes me really sad for the culling. I think it's a really ugly, pointless pokemon. However, it gets Belly Drum and Explosion, and a lot of other interesting moves, so I bred up a competitive one. Because it's so unpopular and has access to such a weird variety of moves (thanks to its Gen 1 normal type legacy), people didn't quite know how to handle it. Some untiered, slow garbage going toe-to-toe with Lando-T. I didn't win all that much, but I felt proud because I made an unorthodox choice. This is why the cull is so awful. There is magic in those unpopular choices. So in a 400+ mon national dex there'll still be unpopular choices, but not half as much variety as in Gen 7. The beauty is in the variety and the surprises. It's a simple game on the surface that has many deep layers. The idea that they think the inability to have all the pokemon available in the latest gen is even worth considering shows they don't know what pokemon even is.
