This was the Pokemon we should have had. As much fanservice as the illustrator shoved into the series, it did an assload of world building and detail as well. He even goes over the probability of some kid with a starter becoming a Pokemon Master at some point, and differentiates between Natural Selection Evolution and Pokemon Evolution

I'm writing a fanfiction that takes heavy inspiration from the Electric Tale of Pikachu series, one of the major plot points being that the probability of becoming a Pokemon Master is so low that it financially ruptures most trainers in the first 3 years because of just the sheer amount of money required to maintain a team of top performers. 96% of all trainers who start their journey generally end up releasing all but one or two pokemon by the end of it and end up going back to school or starting work

I did appreciate that Ono acknowledged this, even if just to handwave with kids getting an accepted block of time to make the attempt. The logistics of a trainer journey suck a lot of the fun out of it, but it is rather interesting for it. I can't imagine most people would go beyond a team of 6 if they had to care for them like actual live animals.
