I personally put the physical/special split and doubles battles as the best features ever added to the game. Even if GF refuse to use the superior battle format that is doubles.
Megas are definitely up there as an idea. The idea that you can sacrifice a valuable held item for a potentially unique and game-altering powerup gives you more options to work with and makes battles more deep. The problem is they keep making mega lucarios that are just plain roided up pokemon instead of making megas a way to dynamically change the battle in your favour. It got a bit better right up until the part where they fucking removed it for some generic inflation fetish shit. Megas had the problem that they couldn't make them for every pokemon, but was dynamaxing/z-moves (read: generic solutions) really the answer?
Mega evos were bad due to implementation, some were really good and all it took was them to build on the idea better. Z-move/dynamax battles are bad by design, they don't add anything new to the battles that you couldn't reasonably have done before and there's only one way to really use them.
Megas were far, far more broken and I'm not surprised people wanted them gone. But Megas could have been done better, z-moves and dynamax are just garbage ideas that don't have the potential to challenge players to do anything new.
