Nintendo games are not graphic focused, but GameFreak reached a nice compromise between sprites and 3D in this generation. The Pokemon also have idle animations and the games feel fast paced compared to Gen4. They threw it all away for 3D models meme that the fanbase has wanted since Stadium days.
"story telling" in both the hand-holdy way we know GameFreak treats us and story telling in the side-quests/optional flavor content. GameFreak always railroads the player at the start of the journey and Gen5 is the first gen where GF took it a bit too far, but not as forced as Gens 6 & 7. The optional stuff is cute. In a lot of towns you can find musicians that will add to the town's background sound giving each town a unique charm.
