It has some of the best gameplay in the series with the emera system, and meaningful mega evolution/awakening mechanics, and a superb soundtrack.
Though it's let down by the replacement of wondermail with a finite pool of missions and making this the single means of recruiting Pokémon. It reduces the team building aspect considerably.
The story is good, but as many have noted, the opening act in the village lasts too long. It isn't insignificant or irrelevant though, it sets up a few important plot points and builds up the characters relationships.
