Basically GF just pissed off around half of it's core player base, and that core base is the base that encourage others to play.
Let's say there's a family, big bro is into pokemon. He would normally encourage little siblings to play pokemon, but after this he might push them towards other interest.
And this isn't going to stop because come Gen 9 ( or even the next remake ) will once again reopen the wound and (hopefully) more people will get pissed at it and turn against the split.
TLDR: Game Freak just cut a hole in their chest and while it might not kill them, it will get infected and unless flushed or cured will lead to their demise.
( Clarifaction I don't actually think Pokemon will ever die, not unless Video Games do. But I certainly think their top dog spot will be dethroned with this. )
