I still don't understand why Charizard ended up the rarest card instead of Mew, Mewtwo, Ho Oh and other legendaries and uncommon pokemons.

Rarity is also about demand, Charizard was even more popular then the Legendaries thus had more demand. and plenty of stores made sure to scalp by selling individual Charizard cards at premium, i recall seeing one for like 50$ at a local one back in the day, in other words, worth about as much as a actual Pokémon game.

Legendary like Mew and Mewtwo got printed a lot more as promos and starter decks. Base set Charazard was actually kinda hard to pull and didn't have many other printings in the beginning.

That's even fucking low. The latest Charizard card printed at max rarity goes up to 120 to 400 euros here.

Base set Charizard can reach up to 1200 to 120.000 euros.

Because Mew was fake rare. They hyped it up but gave out Mew cards like candy, I once got three of them from a cashier at a bookstore during the PokeCraze. There's the movie ancient Mew card too. Everyone had Mew.

unless the conversion's gotten really bad that's like 800 USD

there is no way anyone should pay 800 USD. it's 100 bucks max, only way you justify beyond that is PSA grading but that does not put you in 800 USD territory

It was never really about rarity, Base set Charizard's popularity is largely due to it being Charizard. It's iconic and has big numbers.

Rares from the less-popular early sets (Neo Destiny etc) are harder to find and there may be fewer in circulation.
