The majority prefers avoid talking about it and ignores it as best as they can out of fear of being called racist.
Female leads have a similar problem where a lot of people can't accept they're shown with flaws and hardships natural to any lead.
There's a reason why white male leads are considered the safest leads nowadays even in the current social mood: they may say you're boring and unoriginal and imply you're passively promoting racism, but that's where it ends; none of this unending headaches (normally).
Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you want to make a dark-skinned qt with emerald eyes and a rocking viking helmet, it's your fucking creation and you have the right to make whatever and ignore the cunts crying about how a piece of fiction doesn't validate their view of reality. Sadly a lot of artists seem to be easily intimidated by this type of bullshit.
