I’d argue trying to redo Kanto in gen 5 was also pandering. Same with gen 4 cross gen evolutions. It’s just at the time neither of those were as blatant as “here, have a Kanto starter”

It's not a meme. Sinnoh had a reasonable amount of Kanto pandering, enough to try to please genwunners but it didn't drown out the new. Gen 6/7's new mechanics were built mostly around Kanto mons and the NPC's couldn't stop dick sucking it.

a soft reboot that relegated KANTOOOOOO to the postgame is the exact opposite of pandering. genwunners threw a shitfit over gen 5 for a reason, and it wasn't because they were getting pandered to.

johto and hoenn also got a bunch of cross-gen evolutions. fast forward a decade later and the alola forms gimmick is only given to KANTOOOOOO pokemon.

I mean, even back then I noticed this and was part of what bothered me the most about Unova.
Didn't help that most designs didn't really click with me, they weren't all bad sure, but I think if they had done mainly original designs without trying to emulate Kanto maybe things would've been better.

Good. Nintendo would likely do it right. Kanto is the only thing that needs an actual remake since all it got was a shitty demake last year and Gen 4+ doesn't need one at all.
