You have to compute light realistically, and then deviate from to achieve the effect you want.
LGPE had shading closer to photorealism, despite the stylized models and textures.
Sword and Shield have all of them.
So yeah, without saying it's an "improvement" or that it justified the cut, there is work that has to be done.
Not to mention this is all done dynamically.
