I'd rank them like this (just my 2 cents)
Grass: 1 > 7 > 8 > 3 > 4 > 2 > 5 > 6
Water: 6 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 1 > 8 > 7 > 5
Fire: 4 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 7 > 6 > 8 > 5
So overall: gen 5 starters are shit imo, everything else is cool

I don't really like a lot of starters because often their midstage is coolest. Popplio is good because it is a good base for the line and offers a unique idea of Brionne. Rowlet also. Snivy, Mudkip, Litten, and Froakie are really solid characters that don't need a midstage. Cyndaquil is my favourite though

He's right, though. Gen 5 is garbage and ruined final starter evos, just as it ruined plenty of other shit.
Gen 4 was objectively the last good gen for quality final starters.

Fennekin and the Grass-type from S&M are the only ones which would fit in the first 4 generations, you're right. I can't put it into words but something changed, like they got way more cartoony in a bad way.

And mind you, I'm only talking about what I see in the picture. The grass evolution I'm not sure would fit in past evos, and Fennekin's final evo... maybe as a Alakazam of sorts? Yeah she would fit. She's a fox in a dress with a wand but still looks plain enough.

Fennekin wouldn’t fit at all. Its head is way too big compared to its body. Compare it to something like Vulpix.

Rowlet maybe, but probably not as a starter. Honestly I think the Gen 4 design philosophy has already changed completely from what it was originally, when I was in middle school everyone hated it, but with time people have grown to love it I guess. I still definitely wouldn’t group it with the first two or three gens.
