Pokemon would have never been as popular if it started with the weird designs that are common today. Kantomons are simple yet cool/cute, a combination perfect for attracting boys and girls to the series. Charizard alone is probably responsible for 30% of Red and Blue's (and the Japanese Green) success.

He's not the best and my favorite starters are probably Emboar and Swampert, but Charizard will always have a soft spot in my heart for being the first Pokemon I saw and attracting babby me to the franchise to begin with. I felt vindicated as all fucking get out when he got not one, but two badass Mega Evolutions after spending a few generations as a laughingstock by Smogonfags.

As for my own unpopular opinions, I don't hate any Pokemon and don't think there are any bad designs. There are a few I don't like, but even then it's less me hating their designs and more of me just feeling that they aren't all that interesting. The only ones that fall into that category are Lucario and Boldore/Gigalith (Roggenrola is oddly cute in my opinion)

what makes charizard different from any other dragon is how his design managed to be cool, cute, and unique at the same time
dragons are inherently cool but giving him such a simplistic color palette with those nubby horns humbles his "cool" appeal quite a bit
It is a dragon that is stylized and simplistic while still managing to look fierce at the same time because of ken sugimori's phenomenal art style
his distinguishing feature is the fire on his tail which looks cool and makes his biology more interesting
