it was at least more aesthetically coherent for what it was working with. Better than the GBA games' horrid retrofitted look. It's a shame 5th gen had to try and push the 2.5d thing because it had a great overall library of assets and gorgeously used spriteart, but the camera butchered it so often it almost didn't matter.

No. Nintendo was porting open 3D platformers on DS while gamefreak was still using 2D sprites. Gamefreak has always been a few generations behind on system capabilities.
