To be fair, Flareon's movepool has gotten better with the addition of decent Fire / Fighting coverage in the moves Flare Blitz and Superpower, but unfortunately it's just too slow to make its mark effectively, making it outclassed by basically everything else.
>Weirdly, it could learn zap cannon in gen 2 though.On the topic of generation-exclusive moves, Flareon actually got back Focus Energy in both LGPE and USUM (the latter being from the introduction of the Virtual Console games since Eevee could learn it in Yellow). I've found moderate success with a gimmicky crit set utilizing Focus Energy with Scope Lens, Overheat, Superpower, and Flame Charge.
